“What is a Doula?”
Doula: “A woman experienced in childbirth that provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth” – Merriam Webster. Since approximately 1969, Merriam Webster’s definition has served as the modern day meaning of the Greek word δούλα.
The doulas at Tree of Life Midwifery and Birth Center will connect traditional practices of women supporting women during labor, with modern evidenced based practices to provide assistance and support to you as you welcome your baby in the world.
Tree of Life Doulas
Tree of Life doulas will help you understand the labor and birth process as it relates to your individual experience. We will guide and support both you and your partner in a judgment free environment. While we do not take the place of your partner, we will provide a calming and encouraging atmosphere for all parties to have an active participation in their pregnancy and birth. We will identify ways in which we can assist your partner to be able to better support you throughout the entire process. And most importantly, we will work to empower you and your partner.
We are available 24/7 for emails, texts, or phone calls, but recommend you contact the midwives for medical queries. Although we are educated professionals, and we have vast experience, we are not medical providers. To respect your privacy we are in full compliance with HIPAA.
Our model of support involves having a primary doula with another doula serving as a backup for unforeseen circumstances. This ensures you will never be without the support you so readily deserve. You will have the opportunity to get to know and speak with both doulas.
Your primary doula will spend time prior to your estimated due date getting to know you and your family so we can form a trusting relationship which is necessary to enhance your birth experience. During this time, we will be flexible with meeting you in an environment that is preferable and comfortable to you: your home, the birth center, a coffee shop, etc. During this time, we will also be learning about your preferences, previous experiences, fears, and relaxation techniques that work best for you. Should there be a need to transfer to the hospital during your labor and delivery, we will stay with you at the hospital and for a couple hours after the birth. As your birth doulas, we will visit after you have been home a few days to offer any additional support that may be needed in the immediate days post-partum.
Additionally, Tree Of Life has post-partum doulas available who will visit after your birth to help with baby laundry, cleaning pump parts/bottles, very light house work and caring for the baby so that you can get some much needed rest.
